How to Teach Your Child Good Dental Habits

July 29, 2022

Partnering with a kid's dentist can provide you with the support that you need to ensure they set your child up for a lifetime of good oral health. Teaching your kids good oral health practices early on is an easy way to keep them on track. Follow these tips to teach your child good dental habits.

Start Them Early at the Kid's Dentist

The American Dental Association recommends that children see a kid's dentist at one year old. That may sound a little early to many parents, but getting your child to the dentist for an oral exam early on will make going to the dentist a natural part of their life. The dentist will see if the teeth are coming in correctly and if there are any signs of early decay. According to the CDC, about 34 million educational hours are lost from school each year because of dental problems. Adults with undiagnosed dental issues handle over $45 billion in lost productivity in the United States. Early interventions and prevention are key to a productive life as well as good dental health. Of course, what you do at home also matters.

Make Brushing Fun

You can make brushing fun by brushing together. Bring small children in the bathroom with you while you brush your teeth. Parents are the number one role model for children. If they see you caring for your teeth, they will want to do it as well. You can buy toothbrushes that play music or light up to make brushing a fun time. Typically, you will have to do the brushing for your child until they are about five to be sure it gets done correctly.

Talk About Dental Health

Talk to your children about dental health. Even children as young as two can understand that you can get a “boo-boo” in your teeth if you eat too many sweets. There are also age-appropriate videos that can help your child understand the importance of good dental health practices.

These were just a few ways you can teach your kids about oral health. If you're looking for a
